Ichamara is a smallholders’ coffee from Nyeri, produced by members of the New Gikaru Farmers Cooperative Society. Set on the lower slopes around Mt Kenya’s volcanic soils, this factory has the pedigree we associate with Kenya’s most expressive coffees: altitude, meticulous processing, and an unwavering focus on clean, vibrant flavour.
Cherries are hand-sorted on arrival, depulped and fermented overnight, then washed in fresh, cold water. The parchment is channel-sorted by density into distinct grades before slow drying on raised beds for 1–2 weeks, and finally conditioned for stability. It is a classic Kenyan washed approach, and it shows in the cup: clarity, structure, and that precise, mouth-watering acidity.
In the cup we find ripe red cherry, a cooling hibiscus-tea florality, and punchy raspberry. It is brisk yet sweet, with a silky, tea-like body and a clean, lingering finish.
The varieties here are SL28 and SL34 alongside Ruiru 11, a combination that pairs the depth of the SL cultivars with the bright, modern snap that Kenya does so well. The result is unmistakably Nyeri.
We roast this lightly for filter to honour the work done at origin and to let those red-fruit and floral notes shine. For us at Fjord, this lot captures what we love about Central Kenya: luminous sweetness, precision, and a thrilling sense of place.
